My new wave film was inspired by the French New Wave, as the New Wave I studied - The Italian Neorealist movement - was inspired by war and as I have no experience of war or the aftermath I could not possibly make a film regarding that.
I enjoyed watching French New Wave films and thought it would be a fun style to channel so I thought it would be an interesting perspective to film from.
Throughout my filming inside the car I kept my camera stationary and filmed what happened on the road, giving a sort of voyeuristic view of the world from the car so the viewer could see life as they travelled with the camera. The theme of travel continues with the sun setting and the sky getting darker as the day ends,
I used frequent jump cuts as they are a common trope within the new wave, these create distortion and jarring with force the viewer to become aware they are watching a film and almost creates a montage effect. I also used very long takes.I used a rapid change of scene, which is common in the new wave, by splicing scenes of someone walking in between two shots of a car journey.
Health and Safety
During my filming I made sure all the camera work was done safely. When I filmed in a moving car I made sure to not distract the driver as I filmed and to not let the equipment fall. When filming outside, I made sure all equipment was visible to passers by and that the equipment could not cause harm to them.
My original ideas proved too complicated for the amount of time and expertise possessed, so my end result was somewhat lacking from a self critical point of view. Although the work has prominent features of the new wave which I planned to include, I feel it could have had more narrative.
